Thursday Afternoon to Lost Valley

There is much to blog about that I have been doing professionally but today I want to share what I have done with my daughter on Thursday afternoons this winter. Here is the last day of the after school ski and snowboarding program through Lost Valley in Auburn. Memories are created in the moment but photographs instill it by allowing us to revisit the memory each time. I did not want to forget our time together especially as it her last year at Pownal elementary. 

Funny prelude to this story, the after school program had not happened in a few years, but I was unaware that it had stopped. I emailed the gym Teacher Mr. D in December and said hey what's the deal with the after school ski program, he wrote back I there is no deal! We talked and he then made the motion to to see if there was were 15 students who were able to do it, and signed us up with Lost Valley! My daughter did NOT want to do it, hated the first day, fell down a bunch and was not a fan of me. She asked to quit but I told her she has to go all 6 weeks, and she can't know if she likes until she really tries. But by the second week she started to like it, by the third week she couldn't wait for Thursday. Facing the fear of the unknown and looking stupid for a few minutes while in the process of learning. Kids are fortunate they get to have this process to go through and get good at, the trying and failing process. We adults can run from it in our grown up lives. But this is actually where we can learn from kids and what they go through and apply it to ourselves. If we get past looking like a fool for a little bit there can be another world on the other side!

Side note, it was absolutely cold that day we went skiing, and I had never taken my big chunky 6 pound camera skiing before. My nikon only took 1 trip up the ski lift. I had one chance to chase down the Pownal kids and photograph them in action, hence no downhill photos!

*  A quality question: why some people are more photogenic then others? I have been asked this many times. And it is fascinating how some people photograph better than in they look, and some people look better than they photograph. But a lot of us can stand to learn to love our face a little more than we do! How someone is photographed has a lot to do with how the pictures come out obviously. I will never forget working with a photographer who photographed movie stars and the amount of lighting each required so they could keep their certain look. It was hugely time consuming. So, in essence, it is a complicated like health care, but love the face you have and it is my personal mission to always disprove to someone who says to me, I can't take a good photo. So don't say that to me, if you don't want your picture taken... a lot!
